Mr. Phan Makara is 16 years old now and moved from Siem Reap province to Battambang in 2012 to be with his father and his new family. At that time he had a lot of adjusting to do, including changing his attitude, doing his share of house chores, and attending school regularly. With financial assistance from ETF, Makara is now in the 9th grade. He is a star soccer player for both the church’s youth soccer team and his school. He also plays the drums for the church band every Sunday and Wednesday. He’s been studying the bible, and prayerfully will soon become a Christian.
Phan lives with his sister Rosica (8 years old), brother Kevin (6 years old), and his parents Sam Sokchea and Siden Kun (known as ‘Huy’ among friends). Sokchea and Huy went through a lot early on in their marriage – from Huy battling with cancer to nearly getting a divorce. Huy’s two sisters and brothers-in-law are disciples, and they all prayed for Sokchea and Huy to find God and become Christians. Shortly after the birth of their second child (Kevin, or ‘KK’) their marriage was on the brink of collapse. It was then that Sokchea decided to study the bible. He repented and made it right with Huy. Huy forgave him and also studied the bible, and they were soon both baptized into Christ.
Only a few months after becoming disciples of Jesus, they joined the church planting to Battambang, Cambodia. Their faith grew deeper and stronger, and it was then that Sokchea and Huy decided to welcome into their family, Makara – Sokchea’s son from his first marriage, whom he did not meet until Makara was 12 years old.
The funding goal noted above is intended to fund this child’s educational needs for a one-year period including tuition, books, and uniforms.
